Local Search Basics
How Google Business Categories Shape Local Visibility
Every category comes from a fixed list Google controls — you choose from it, you never write your own or edit the wording. Each label is how you tell Google, in its own vocabulary, what your business actually is.
Categories carry most of the weight in local search. Type “bariatric surgeon Chicago” or “emergency plumber near me” and Google checks that query against the categories of nearby profiles to decide who is even eligible to appear. They also switch on features — menus, booking and appointment links, and attribute sets such as “Accepts insurance” for medical offices — all of which hinge on the category you pick.

Additional Categories Allowed
You get one primary category plus up to nine extras, all drawn from the same Google list. Google’s global catalog sits at roughly 4,039 categories as of 2026; this tool covers the 3,832 live for US businesses and tracks the additions and renames Google pushes out every month.
Insight: In Whitespark’s Local Search Ranking Factors research, the primary category outranks review volume, proximity and site authority as the top driver in Google Maps. Get it wrong and your Chicago business can disappear from thousands of local searches each month.
Your Game Plan
A Proven Way to Select Your GBP Category
Picking from Google’s category list is not about grabbing whatever looks closest. These are the three steps our team works through every time we tune a Chicago client’s Google Business Profile.
1Lead with your single most specific service
Figure out the one thing the business is really about — not the full menu, just the heart of it. A cosmetic surgeon is a "Cosmetic surgeon", not a broad "Surgeon" or "Medical center"; a personal-injury firm is a "Personal injury attorney", not merely a "Law firm". Google rewards the tightest category that still describes you honestly, because broad labels miss most of the high-intent searches that turn into real work.
2Check what the Chicago Map Pack leaders use
Pull up the Map Pack for your money keyword in Chicago and study the three profiles sitting above you. Note the primary category each one runs — view the page source, or use a Chrome extension that reveals it. When every leader shares one precise category and you don't, that single mismatch can explain why you're stuck beneath them in competitive Chicagoland results.
3Reserve extra categories for services you truly offer
You can stack up to nine additional categories, but treat them as a short list, not a dumping ground. Loosely related picks water down your relevance and can drag you down. Add only the service lines customers really search for, drop the rest, and keep that primary category razor sharp.
Jeff’s Tip: After more than a decade tuning GBP profiles, the mistake I run into most is picking the label that sounds more impressive instead of the most specific one on offer. A general surgeon filed under “Medical center” will never beat one filed as “Surgeon” for surgical searches. Precision wins, every single time. — Jeff Tormey, Founder, SEO Guru
Good to Know
Google Business Category Questions, Answered
What exactly is a Google Business Profile category?
It is a fixed label you pick from Google's official category list to describe what your business does, and it is the main cue Google uses to connect your profile with local searches. You assign one primary category and as many as nine additional ones — every pick from Google's set — and Google keeps the list refreshed month to month.
How large is the Google My Business category list?
Worldwide, Google keeps somewhere around 4,000 Business Profile categories, with roughly 3,832 open to US businesses. It is never static — Google adds, renames and drops categories every month — so this year's best fit may not hold up next year.
What if my business type is not on Google's list?
You cannot build a custom one; the choice is limited to Google's predefined set. When there is no exact match, select the nearest specific category as your primary and lean on the services section and your business description to fill in the details.
Can the wrong category really hurt my rankings?
Absolutely. The primary category ranks among the heaviest factors in Google Maps and the Map Pack. The wrong one can leave your Chicago business all but hidden for your most valuable searches, while the right one can push you into the top three for your core terms.
How frequently should I revisit my category choice?
Check it twice a year at a minimum, and again whenever you launch a major service or Google reshuffles its list. In a competitive Chicago market a quarterly review is smarter, since one category swap can move you up or down the Map Pack.
Ready for a Complete Local SEO Review?
Nailing the category is the groundwork — but a Google Business Profile that actually ranks needs reviews, services, attributes, posts and photos all pulling the same direction.
